The festive season between December 23rd and January 2nd sees dramatic changes to store opening times across the United Kingdom. Knowing when stores shut early on Christmas Eve or close on Boxing Day is essential for avoiding festive disruption.

Key Festive Trading Dates & Expected Schedules

1. December 23rd (Festive Rush Day)

Most major Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury's, and Morrisons stores extend trading hours until midnight or 1:00 AM to accommodate last-minute holiday food shopping.

2. Christmas Eve (Dec 24)

All supermarkets operate early closing hours on Christmas Eve:

  • Large Supermarkets: Close early, typically between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM.
  • Express Stores: Close around 8:00 PM or 9:00 PM.

3. Christmas Day (Dec 25)

ALL major supermarkets (Tesco, ASDA, Sainsbury's, Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons, Waitrose, Co-op) are CLOSED nationwide on Christmas Day. The only retail outlets open are select 24-hour petrol forecourts and small independent convenience stores.

4. Boxing Day (Dec 26)
