A decade ago, the phrase "24-hour supermarket" was standard across the UK. Large Tesco Extra and Asda Supercentres routinely stayed open 24 hours a day, Monday through Saturday, offering night-shift workers, students, and night owls the convenience of shopping at 3:00 AM.
Today, finding a supermarket open past midnight is incredibly rare. The vast majority of former 24-hour stores now close their doors by 10:00 PM, 11:00 PM, or midnight, reopening at 6:00 AM the following morning.
What caused this sudden shift away from round-the-clock retail, and is there any chance that 24-hour shopping will make a comeback?
The Pandemic Catalyst
While the trend away from 24-hour opening times had already begun slowly in the late 2010s, the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated it dramatically.
In March 2020, supermarkets suspended 24-hour trading to allow staff enough time to restock shelves overnight and thoroughly clean stores during a period of unprecedented panic-buying. Once those restrictions lifted, supermarket executives realised that the financial benefits of remaining open 24/7 did not justify the costs. Most stores never returned to their old schedules.
Why Supermarkets End 24/7 Opening Times
Several factors contributed to the permanent end of 24-hour supermarket trading:
- Rising Operational Costs: Keeping a massive retail space heated, lit, and staffed throughout the night is expensive. Energy price spikes in recent years made nighttime running costs prohibitive.
- Low Overnight Sales: Footfall between midnight and 5:00 AM has historically been very low. Supermarkets found that they were running entire stores for just a handful of customers.
- Shift in Shelf-Stocking: With stores closed, overnight staff can stock shelves much faster without having to navigate around customers or answer questions.
- Security and Safety: Stores are more vulnerable to theft and anti-social behaviour during late-night hours. Closing early reduces safety risks for checkout and store staff.
"By closing at 10:00 PM or midnight, supermarkets can focus their staff on stocking shelves overnight, ensuring a better experience for daytime shoppers."
Will 24-Hour Supermarkets Ever Return?
It is highly unlikely that national UK supermarket chains will reintroduce widespread 24-hour trading. The retail landscape has changed permanently, particularly with the growth of online grocery shopping and rapid delivery services (like Deliveroo, Uber Eats, and Getir) which cater to late-night cravings without requiring physical stores to remain open.
How to Find Late-Night Supermarkets Now
If you do need to shop late at night, you still have some options:
- Late-Closing Stores: Many large supermarkets still open until 11:00 PM or midnight from Monday to Saturday. Use our homepage to search for these.
- Petrol Station Forecourts: Small convenience shops attached to petrol stations (like BP Spar, Shell Little Waitrose, and Esso Tesco Express) frequently operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Co-op and Express formats: These smaller shops are allowed to trade outside normal Sunday trading limitations, often staying open until 11:00 PM on Sundays.
