Are Supermarkets Open on Bank Holidays in Scotland?

Shopping in Scotland can catch tourists and visitors from other parts of the UK by surprise. While Scotland is part of the UK, its legal framework surrounding shop opening times is very different, resulting in much more flexible supermarket hours.

In this guide, we will look at how bank holiday opening hours operate in Scotland, how Scottish Sundays differ from English Sundays, and the strict rules governing when you can buy alcohol in Scottish supermarkets.

1. Bank Holiday Supermarket Hours in Scotland

In Scotland, bank holidays are not treated as general retail closure days. Unlike England and Wales, where Good Friday or Monday bank holidays lead to heavily reduced supermarket schedules:

  • Standard Bank Holidays: Large supermarkets in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, and elsewhere in Scotland typically observe normal operating hours on spring, summer, and autumn bank holidays.
  • Tesco, Asda, and Morrisons: Often operate standard hours (e.g., 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM or 11:00 PM) rather than shutting early.
  • Christmas Day: This remains the only day when all major supermarkets close completely across Scotland.

2. The Sunday Trading Advantage

The biggest difference you will notice in Scotland is on Sunday afternoons.

In England and Wales, large supermarkets are forced by law to close by 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM. In Scotland, there are no Sunday trading laws for stores of any size.

As a result, large supermarkets in Scotland can open 24 hours a day or trade late on Sundays. If you need to do a full weekly shop at 8:00 PM on a Sunday, you can easily do so in Scottish stores.

"Because Scotland is not bound by the Sunday Trading Act 1994, hypermarkets of all sizes are allowed to open for their standard hours on Sundays."

3. Scottish Alcohol Licensing Rules (A Critical Catch)

While supermarket trading hours are very relaxed in Scotland, alcohol licensing hours are much stricter than in England and Wales.

If you are shopping late at night or early in the morning, be aware of the following statutory limits:

  • The Time Limit: Supermarkets and off-licenses in Scotland can only sell alcohol between 10:00 AM and 10:00 PM.
  • No Exceptions: Even if a supermarket is open 24 hours or until midnight, checkout systems will block the sale of beer, wine, or spirits after 10:00 PM. Barriers are typically drawn across alcohol aisles.
  • In contrast, supermarkets in England and Wales can sell alcohol at any hour they are open, subject to local licensing.
